EVENT INFORMATION

WHEN: July 15 10:00am through July 28, 2007. The event will close at 12:00 noon on the 28th for pack out, all attendees to depart not later than 10:00am on the 29th. These dates straddle a weekend in the middle and allow for travel on Saturday, July 14 to get to the event and Sunday, July 29 to return home.
WHAT: Crossroads in Time is a participants-only event for medievalists executing living history and re-enactment presentations from the era from 1300 to 1500 in Europe West of the Urals and North of the Mediterranean. It is an opportunity for professional development, recreation, and enjoyment of the pleasures of the re-enactment lifestyle, as well as mercantile activity. The premise for the event is a wayside camp for travelers of all stripe: civilian, military, and clerical, en route to or from the wide variety of activities requiring travel: pilgrimage, commercial activity, war, or other business.

There will be two encampments at Crossroads in Time, the medieval tableaux, and the modern camp. The medieval tableaux is intended to provide as complete an immersion experience as possible for all participants; all exterior activities, props and equipment are to adhere as closely as possible to medieval design and materials. All persons outside of their tents are to be dressed according to the fashions current in their portrayed dates and locales of origin. An attached document, the Event Guidelines, provides further information about these matters.

The Compaignye du Chalis, as hosts of the event, courtesy of William Huggins & Two Bills Brewing, will operate an alestake, where our hand-crafted ales and beers can be consumed by those of legal age to do so, and it is likely that some light fare will be available to go with it. We will also bring Le Doigt Dieu, a 1/3 scale swinging-counterweight trebuchet, for examination and test firing. Jehan de Pelham will be hosting an emprise of arms in the style of the late 14th century, in accordance with my portrayal as a gentleman of arms.

The modern camp is intended to provide a location for tent or RV campers wishing to participate in the event to reside during the event. Located in a small clearing just to the northwest of the medieval tableaux, it is linked via a short trail (about 125 meters) through the mixed forest. Waste management facilities (chemical latrines, a water point for potable water, and a dumpster) will be co-located with the modern camp, toward the medieval tableaux.
Istampitta (http://www.istanpitta.com/) has agreed to the date change, and will play from the 20th through the 23rd of July. Istampitta are a medieval music ensemble of the highest caliber and will be an organic part of the event during the four days the trio (possibly quartet) will be with us.

WHO: If you're a person interested in executing a high-quality portrayal of people, material culture, activities, and pastimes of the era from 1300 to 1500 in Europe, and you want to have a venue where you can meet others of like mind in an informal, low-pressure setting where you can exchange notes, learn from your fellow re-enactors and interpreters, in an immersive private setting, then Crossroads in Time is for you.

WHERE: The event will be held in Sydney Valley, Utah, on public lands. Sydney Valley is located 30 minutes east of Cedar City, Utah near Cedar Breaks National Monument on Highway 143. Satellite imagery of the site is available here from Yahoo! Maps: http://tinyurl.com/ybzffo; the site is the first and second clearings on the east side of Sydney Valley road, north of Highway 143. The site is a primitive site, though water and waste management will be provided. Baled seed free alfalfa hay for participants bringing mounts will also be provided to supplement free grazing. There are trails and dirt roads for riding. The nearest towns are Panguitch or Brian Head ski resort, fifteen minutes from the site. Terrain is mixed aspen and conifer, with grasses suitable for grazing. The only visual distractions expected are jet contrails in the sky. Fires will almost certainly not be permitted, as the average fire ban has come into effect just before July the 4th weekend.

Cooking will have to be done in tents on propane stoves (an unfortunate requirement wrought by environmental limitations). The Compaignye du Chalis is arranging (80% sure) to have a large Tentsmiths round end marquee to serve as a communal activities tent. Temperatures will be cool, seventies during the day and forties at night--bring your warm clothes. July is one of the driest months of the year, averaging one half inch of rain, so weather is expected to be generally dry, though it is always advisable to bring clothing for inclement weather--this is not a camping trip at the local KOA or park!

WHY: Crossroads in Time presents an opportunity for an immersive re-enactment experience, coupled with professional development. Most of the time, our re-enactment efforts are aimed at paying customers, and there are distractions from the enjoyment of the pastime for its own sake. Crossroads in Time offers a chance to re-charge, refit, and unwind.

COST/ADMISSION/PARTICIPATION DETAILS: The site fee will be $125 per adult 18 and over, $75 per attendee 13 through 17, $50 per attendee 5 through 12, and children under 5 get in for free. Families will pay a maximum of $375. Attendees will sign a liability waiver stating an understanding and familiarity with the hazards of out-of doors camping and medieval interpretation. Minors must be accompanied by legal guardians. Animals must have up-to date health certifications and vaccines. All persons present at the medieval tableaux are expected to be in full medieval clothing at all times, without accoutrements or accessories properly belonging to other eras.

Best to you all, thanks kindly for your interest, and hope to see you there!
